Talking About Past Events (with Adele & Awkward Weekends)

Hey there! Welcome back to English Through the Looking Glass!
Today’s episode is called:
“Talking About Past Events” – or, in other words…
How to talk about the weird stuff you did last weekend.

Because let’s be honest — something always happens. Even if it’s just:“I stayed in bed. All day. Again.”

To talk about the past, we use the past simple tense.
Don’t worry, it’s simple. It says so in the name. 😏

🔹 REGULAR VERBS:

Just add -ed to the verb. Like:

  • dance → danced
  • cook → cooked
  • cry → cried (especially after watching a sad movie…)

Now, of course, English likes to be dramatic, so we also have:

🔸 IRREGULAR VERBS – the rebels.

These guys do whatever they want:

  • go → went
  • see → saw
  • eat → ate
  • have → had
    Like:

“I had pizza. Then, I ate too much. Then, I regretted everything.”

Okay, here’s the fun part. Let’s look at a song that’s full of past tense.
🎤 Adele – Someone Like You

👉 Example lyrics:

“I heard that your dreams came true…”
“I guess she gave you things I didn’t give to you.”
“I hate to turn up out of the blue, uninvited

But I couldn’t stay away, I couldn’t fight it”

👏 Past tense EVERYWHERE!
heard, came, gave, didn’t give, couldn’t stay away, couldn’t fight.

You’re basically learning grammar and crying at the same time. Efficient! The emotional involvement almost guarantees that it will be engraved in your mind.

When did all this drama happen?
To talk about when, we use:

  • yesterday
  • last night
  • last weekend
  • three years ago
  • in 2015 (Adele probably)

➡ Example:
I met my ex last week.
It was… unforgettable. Unfortunately.

You:
Okay, drama aside — let’s see a NORMAL conversation between two friends, Anna and Mike.

👩 Anna: What did you do last weekend?
🧔 Mike: I went to the countryside. No Wi-Fi. Total freedom.
👩 Anna: Sounds great!
🧔 Mike: Yeah. I read, I walked, I… stared at sheep. 🔎 Past simple all over the place:
did you do, went, read, walked, stared

Now it’s your moment! ✨
Finish this sentence in the comments:

👉 “Last weekend, I…”

You can say:

  • “…watched Netflix until 3 AM.”
  • “…ate cold pasta and pretended it was intentional.”

“…went outside. Accidentally.”

That’s it for today! You survived the past — in English!

Next time we’ll talk about making plans and invitations, which may or may not include:
“A cat invited me to its rooftop party in Barcelona.” Who knows.

🎵 Until then:

Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and maybe share this with your fellow English learners.
And remember:
English isn’t boring – unless you are. 😏
See you soon!
